Mid-season changes

The Red Bull family has run three drivers across two seats this summer. Isack Hadjar’s wrist injury, sustained before the Dutch Grand Prix, kept him out of three consecutive rounds. Racing Bulls regular Liam Lawson was promoted to the senior Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, and reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda stepped into Lawson’s Racing Bulls seat — which is why all three appear in the standings for both teams. Hadjar is expected back once cleared by the FIA’s medical delegate.

The rookies

Three drivers are in their first full seasons. Arvid Lindblad, the British-Swedish Red Bull junior, replaced Hadjar at Racing Bulls when Hadjar was promoted; Gabriel Bortoleto, the 2024 Formula 2 champion, leads Audi’s debut season on points; and Franco Colapinto is in his first full campaign at Alpine after a partial 2025. All three came through the route we describe in how to become an F1 driver.

The numbers

Lando Norris runs number 1 as reigning champion — his permanent number 4 is reserved for him should he choose to return to it. Max Verstappen, who ran number 1 through his four title seasons, has reverted to number 3. Every other driver uses the permanent number they chose on entering the sport, which stays with them for their career.

Who is out of contract for 2027?

The 2027 regulation reset makes this winter’s driver market unusually fluid. Fernando Alonso has publicly tied his decision on continuing to the final shape of the 2027 rules and has confirmed an alternative racing programme if he stops. Red Bull must choose between Hadjar and Lawson for its second seat, with Lindblad pressing from Racing Bulls. Haas has said its 2027 line-up decision is live, and Oscar Piastri’s McLaren contract — ending well before team-mate Norris’s 2030 deal — makes him the market’s most theoretically available elite driver. Our driver market analysis covers the state of play in full.
